The Importance Of Psychotherapy

An enterprise worth looking into due to its questionable benchmark of defining normalcy, belongs to an art of that branch of the science discipline that tries to distinguish between the normal from the abnormal or seemingly pathological human behavior. Granted, these lofty laurels are based on myriad exemplars of psychopathology helping to facilitate and index that which is held outside the realm of normalcy. Of course, it's never been clear-cut for even the most advanced scholars have had much difficulty in academically drawing the line between the two bridges. In soothe, psychotherapy has always been rendered a skill compared to normal diagnoses and understandably so, because in reality, what one defines as normal is based on perception and therefore, is blurred.
Psychiatry and psychology have become the standards through which conceptualization between what happens to be sane and psychotic to what is normal and neurotic have been exposed. We all have had spells when we've strayed too close to the border due to our experiences and circumstances, perhaps even patrolled the other side for a while but have always bounced back to the land of normal. There are however, cases so unfortunate wherein the people once strayed far beyond the brink, have been unable to return to their wits. Should we revolve around the aspect of what society chooses for us to be appropriate, be it say, a mode of conduct, what then happens to our individuality, creativity and self-expression? To counterpoint, a lot of what is deemed poorly suited, abnormal or pathological behavioral patterns stem from a conscious or unconscious rebellion to not conform as sheep; prohibited to authenticate a difference in a society that demands coherence of sorts.
The psychiatrists, the psychologists and of course therapists have ample training in evaluating the differences between normal and abnormal social behavior and thusly come into play. Their inv

aluable expertise lies in the objective to distinguish whether the arbitrary border between mental health and mental disorder have been crossed. Certainly, it's a decision not taken lightly as many societal members do, for it's a life changing exercise for the patient on their couch. How they arrive at their conclusion is based on a multitude of questions with extensive deliberations and tiresome examinations. They assess the degree of illness notably present by a simple encounter, how functionality in occupation, academics or their demeanor has been impaired and the severity of duress expressed by the patient. Sometimes, there may be no reporting of distress by the individual but their behavior is an indicator of self-destruction, of social consequences that could occur or a suffering they bring out in others. Psychotherapy therefore, is a means by which the doctor can achieve recognition and conveyance of such problems that have manifested. Quite unlike societal labeling wherein the reason is not accounted for nor legit, their aim is to understand and provide therapeutic assistance to the malediction that caused a shift from normalcy and help alleviate those symptoms.
Of course, it ought to be noted that mental health and mental disorder differ to a degree of a fraction in a weakness of mind and duration of that period. Psychotherapy is not a method by which to achieve a conformity to some collective norm which suppresses someone to be different, diverse or to prohibit freedom but rather its function is to achieve an understanding of the suffering and like aforementioned, treating this difficult time in the person's life. If the level of debilitation goes beyond the scope of what is commonplace, then can the situation be appropriately addressed. The enormity of this responsibility is courageous which is why professional help is the quickest route to get your normal routine back, should one have transgressed. This is what is meant by clinical judgement and should be left to professionals to determine and not society who is quick the judge the eccentric amongst them.
I remember Freud who accounted that we're all but a little neurotic and Jung who understood that we all come from a range of complexes. Feelings of despair, dissatisfaction in one's life, anger or anxiety are but found too common, but therapy arrives when these emotions measure far outside the normal existential frustration. Going to a psychiatrist doesn't immediately mean you're on the express railway to insanity, that you have some deficit in character, brain disease or a chemical imbalance, but that you wish to express an inclination or a break from normalcy that you feel within. It involves you being confident enough to take care of your being and not be in a naive state of denial.
If you or someone you know is associated with mental trauma, take upon that responsibility and entrust them in the hands of experienced and trained professionals for if left untreated could bring about a grave and intolerable psychological disturbance with destructive behavior that's symptomatic to the disorder.
